Jose Mourinho was banned by the Football Association for kicking a water bottle because his actions "endangered people around him".

That was the verdict of an independent commission, who had been looking in to the Manchester United manager's one-match touchline ban.

Mourinho admitted a changed of improper conduct after United's 1-1 draw at home to West Ham last month. The former Chelsea boss had been venting his frustration after Paul Pogba was booked for diving during the first half.

The commission ruled that Mourinho had "aggressively kicked the bottle in a manner that could have endangered people around him regardless of the motivation to do so".

The report added: "Mr Mourinho ought to be credited for his admission to the charge, his non-confrontational actions when engaging with the officials subsequent to him kicking the bottle and his apology, which the commission accepted as being sincere."

Mourinho, who was also fined £16,000, claimed he had been singled out by the FA and punished unfairly.

“The only thing I would like would be the same rules for everyone,” said Mourinho. “Let’s go back to the last one. I kicked a bottle of water. I cannot do it. If I do it, then it’s a sending off. After that, there is a punishment.

“I accept that it’s a sending-off and, in fact, if you see the images when the referee comes over, I don’t say a word or make a complaint. I accepted the suspension of one match and it’s as simple as that. But it has to be the same for every manager. It has to be the same.”
