Jose Mourinho will hand exiled Manchester United striker Anthony Martial the chance to redeem himself on Sunday.

Martial has been left out of Mourinho's last two matchday squads, raising questions about his long-term United future.

The France international, who joined United from Monaco 17 months ago in a £36million deal that could rise to £58m, has struggled to convince Mourinho of his worth.

Martial, 21, has struggled to hold down a regular starting place this season under Mourinho and has scored just six goals.

Against that backdrop of limited games, Martial's agent claimed the player had considered leaving United to join Sevilla on loan.

That drew a blunt response from Mourinho, who publicly told Martial to ignore his agent and listen to him instead.

Mourinho is known to have been frustrated by Martial's failure to play to his potential when he has selected him this season.

But the United boss revealed he will give Martial – as well as fit-again Luke Shaw – the chance to impress against Wigan in the FA Cup.

Asked how Martial had taken his latest omission, Mourinho said: "I don't know. I don't speak with the players about how they take it.

"But he will play Sunday and, if on Sunday he plays magnificently, he will play against Hull City in the next match. It's simple."

Mourinho will rest first-choice keeper David De Gea tomorrow, after giving him the weekend off, but will pick a strong side to try to ensure United do not fall victim to an FA Cup upset.

"The challenge is the next match - and the next match is the FA Cup,” said Mourinho.

"We know the difficulty to play against a Championship team. We played already Wigan in pre-season, now they are with Warren [Joyce, former United reserve team boss].

"He knows us, he will come with special motivation to play against his old club. They will bring lots of fans too, so the match is going to be difficult.

“We have to play with a very good team. The only player who is out is De Gea. I give him a few days off, but apart from that, I go with a good team because we want to try to beat them.

"If we progress in the FA Cup, then it's another round. It's really difficult for us but it's difficult for good reasons – the good reasons are that we progress in all competitions."
