Jose Mourinho has tried to create a siege mentality at Manchester United as they bid to avoid a third straight Premier League defeat.

United host Leicester today, with boss Mourinho having made the big call to drop skipper Wayne Rooney, after a string of below-par displays.

And the United boss has delivered a robust defence of himself and his players in his programme notes ahead of the lunchtime clash.

"During the week we are not on holiday, we have no time for posh dinners in restaurants, we don't feed the vanity of the opinion-makers," said Mourinho.

"We work hard and remind each other that what we have achieved and what we have in life, nobody gave to us on a silver plate.

"We had to fight for it so now, after a bad week, we are going to do what we did all our lives: fight hard."

Mourinho, writing in his programme notes, said: "I am here because this club has a magic attraction, a magnetic feeling to make you desire to work for Manchester United.

"I knew what was waiting for me. Some are happy to choose their easy jobs. I have always chosen the challenge and never the easy target.

"Porto was in a long period without the championship, Chelsea were chasing their first Premier League, Inter wanted a Champions League that was a 45-year dream; Real Madrid were trying to win a title against the best Barcelona and break the Champions League last 16 Champions League wall that they couldn't jump for many years.

"Chelsea then had to rebuild a team after a generation that was coming to an end."
