Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says Wayne Rooney's angry reaction after being substituted was due to referee Craig Pawson failing to award the Red Devils a penalty.

Joe Ledley appeared to beat the ball away with his arm inside the Palace penalty area when the scores were level at 1-1, but Pawson did not blow up, report the Manchester Evening News .

Mourinho brought Marcus Rashford on for Rooney in the 80th minutes and the United skipper slammed his boot on the away dugout after confronting the fourth official. He was later seen limping as he left the ground.

Mourinho clarified Rooney's reaction was not over his withdrawal, though.

"He was angry with a possible penalty," Mourinho said. "He was complaining with the referee on the pitch, he was complaining with the fourth official on the bench, he was really upset with it, but even at 1-1 I told him 'Forget it, let's forget it.'

"No, I didn't [the handball]. I didn't see. The only thing I can say is the referee is good, he's good. He is one of the good young referees and I like his work, if he made mistakes, unlucky for him and unlucky for us but he is a very good referee and you have to support.

"Like [Robert] Madley against Tottenham, big game for a young referee, so it's a good opportunity."

Mourinho was visibly delighted after United recorded successive wins in the Premier League for the first time since August.

"It's two big wins because two victories means six draws," he added. "In five matches you win two and lose three, in terms of points it's better than five draws.

"But the reality is that I forget my draws and I focus on my performances and the performances are very good for a long time, a long time. So the players deserve these two happiness at home and happiness away.

"But now comes West Bromwich Albion, very difficult and then we have Sunderland, Middlesbrough, teams that desperately need points to run away from the relegation."
