Jose Mourinho pointed the finger at Manchester United's defending after Neymar ended their winning pre-season run in Washington.

The Old Trafford boss saw Brazilian star Neymar seize on a mistake by Antonio Valencia to score the only goal of a fast-paced first half.

And although his stars pushed right until the end United couldn't conjure an equaliser and headed home to Manchester having suffered the only defeat of their five game tour.

But he made it clear he wasn't happy with the way United defended – with £31million Victor Lindelof again looking unconvincing.

Mourinho said: “It was a good game for the crowd and I think in pre-season it's important also to play for that when you come to the US and you have a stadium with 80,000 thousand very enthusiastic fans.

“This is what they want, they want [Lionel] Messi, Neymar, [Paul] Pogba, they want the best players to show what they are.

“And I think first half it happened but it could have been any score. It was an open game, we didn't defend well, I'm not happy.

“In the second half there were lots of changes for them and for us, but both teams played for the result.

“We tried to equalise, they tried to keep the ball, possession and defend well so I felt in the second half it was still a positive match.”

The only slight worry for Mourinho was a muscle injury to midfielder Jesse Lingard but it's not thought to be serious.
