Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has urged Luke Shaw to 'grow up' after the England left-back made his return to action against Everton.

Shaw was left out of the squad for the Red Devils' goalless draw against West Brom on Saturday amid criticism from his boss, leaving his future at Old Trafford in doubt.

But he took his place on the bench this evening and came on as a second-half substitute for Ashley Young.

United could only draw again in front of their home fans, and needed a last-gasp penalty from Zlatan Ibrahimovic to secure a point after Phil Jagielka had given the Toffees the lead in the first half.

Ashley Williams handled Shaw's goal-bound effort and was given his marching orders, before the Swede coolly dispatched from the spot.

"He [Shaw] has lots of potential but the football brain and the professional brain has to be with the talent," Mourinho told BT Sport. "He has to change his football brain.

"He was doing things in the second half when he was reacting to my voice. If he was on the other side for sure he would not do it."

Mourinho continued in the post-match press conference that Shaw's performance from "good" but "it was his body with my brain".

"Because he was in front of me and I was making every decision for him.

"I think he has a future here but Manchester United cannot wait. We need the kids to grow up."

"We need at this level the fantastic body he has to play football, the fantastic physical qualities he has, the very good technical ability he has - but he cannot play with my understanding of the game.

"He must understand the game, he must think, and he must accelerate the process.

"Twenty-one years old is old enough to have a better understanding of the game - but his contribution was good.

"He goes today in a positive feeling because his performance was very positive. I'm happy with what he gave us."
