The Liverpool boss suggesting he was interested in signing the forward currently banging in the goals for Manchester United should prompt an interesting response from Old Trafford.

Sure enough, Jurgen Klopp has admitted Liverpool signing Romelu Lukaku would have been an 'interesting move' - even if they had 'no chance' of convincing bitter rivals Everton to sell, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Manchester United famously gazumped champions Chelsea when they completed a £75m move for the Belgium superstar in July after dropping their interest in Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata.

Although Lukaku's transfer fee could eventually rise to £90m, he has made a stunning start to his career at Old Trafford and scored 11 goals in his first 10 games.

And Klopp admits he would have been interested in signing the 24-year-old - if he had been available.

"We have Daniel Sturridge. We all know about his potential. Now he’s fit, so hopefully we can use it," he said.

"And we have Dom Solanke for sure the biggest English talent in the number nine position. That’s a fantastic situation.

"Because [Alvaro] Morata is now really working and is a perfect fit, because Lukaku is the perfect fit for Manchester United, because Harry Kane is now scoring [for Tottenham], because [Alexandre] Lacazette is doing well… we had other things we felt we needed to do first.

"For us, the market was not really there. We had no chance for [Romelu] Lukaku. That would have been an interesting move. You cannot buy just because you think you will not score enough. We have enough chances and we will score."
