Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he "cried like a baby" when his best man David Wagner guided Huddersfield to promotion to the Premier League.

Ahead of the pair's first ever meeting in the Premier League at Anfield on Saturday, Klopp admitted that he turned down the chance to attend the Terriers' play-off final against Reading in May for fear of overshadowing his friend.

"I was in the South of France at a friends' house and we watched it on television," said Klopp, who worked with Wagner at both Mainz and Borussia Dortmund.

"He asked me if I wanted to come, but I feel a little bit sorry for him as I really think he is big and strong enough, and what he has achieved so far is big enough, so nobody has to mention he is best man of Klopp.

"I did not want to come in the stadium and have one camera on me and see how I react when he should be, or his team, in the middle of all interest."

And Klopp admitted that he was so pleased for his friend when Christopher Schindler scored from the penalty spot to win the shootout for the Terriers and send them to the promised land that he lost control of himself.

"I was nervous like hell," he added. "And afterwards, Ulla (Klopp's wife) sent him a video of me crying like a baby when it happened, the final penalty, as I could not stop."

As best man, Wagner was in charge of Klopp's stag do for his 2005 wedding, and has revealed the details of what sounds like quite the event.

"In Germany, we have a Christmas market and in Mainz, they have one of the biggest Christmas markets in Germany," he said.

"We put Santa Claus masks on us and there were 25 Santa Clauses, because Jurgen was not able to go in the Christmas market as a normal person. But everybody recognised that here was a group to join Klopp to celebrate!"

Speaking about the wedding the November issue of FourFourTwo magazine , Wagner added some details of Klopp's boozy wedding.

“I’m not the best drinker – I need two beers and it’s enough," he admitted. "Klopp’s miles better at drinking alcohol than me!

“Yes, I was the best man, but I’ve no idea what the speech was like because I drank too much alcohol!”
