Jurgen Klopp has revealed how Philippe Coutinho reacted to being told he wasn't going to be a part of the Liverpool squad to face Manchester City - and it seems he didn't take the news to heart.

The Brazilian attempted to push through a move to Barcelona this summer, with the Catalan giants making three bids for his services.

But Liverpool maintained Coutinho was not for sale and repeatedly rejected their advances, ensuring he would still be a Reds player this season.

The 25-year-old has yet to make an appearance for Liverpool this campaign, but has represented his nation in World Cup qualifying.

He was even on the scoresheet in Brazil's 2-0 win over Ecuador, and after seemingly shaking a niggling back complaint, looked set to return this Saturday.

But speaking to the press on Friday, Klopp revealed the Brazilian would not be playing any part of the game at the Etihad, before revealing how Coutinho took the news.

"He came in yesterday, accepted 100 per cent the situation – I didn't even have to say anything about it," explained the Reds boss.

"We don't know how long he will play for the club so there is absolutely no problem and I am completely fine with this situation.

"He looks like he is the same Philippe. The most important thing is no-one told me anything where I thought 'Oh, that is too much'.

"There was another pretty big club and they wanted to have a player from us and there was a club decision.

"You can't say 'no' and it stops in one day, that's how it is.

"I said yesterday in the dressing room 'Boys, welcome two new players: Alex (deadline-day signing Oxlade-Chamberlain) and Phil.

Liverpool have kick-started the 2017/18 campaign in sensational fashion following a surprise 3-3 draw with Watford on the opening day.

Since their trip to Vicarage Road, the Reds beat Crystal Palace 1-0 before thumping top-four rivals Arsenal 4-0 at Anfield.
