Philippe Coutinho was left frustrated on transfer deadline day as Liverpool stood firm and rebuffed any offers from Barcelona for the Brazilian midfielder.

He went into the dying embers of the transfer window hoping to secure a dream move to the Nou Camp, but knew with 'hours' remaining he would be staying at Anfield.

"We do not know how to say it. We still do not understand why Liverpool did not want to sell," a family member is reported as saying by Spanish outlet Sport.

Brazil boss Tite had decided not to start Coutinho in the World Cup qualifier against Ecuador, instead planning on playing him in tomorrow night's match in Colombia.

But with his fate decided, he was introduced just after the hour mark, and changed the game.

He scored a goal as Brazil ran out 2-0 winners, and was visibly emotional in his celebration as the ball hit the back of the net.

Coutinho did not go through the mixed zone, instead spending the night with his Brazil teammates to dine out at a restaurant in Port Alegre, but he struggled to crack a smile.

Throughout the day, he opted to sleep rather than try and get involved in any negotiations, before heading to the stadium in the evening.

He has received huge support from his teammates and coaching staff with Brazil, including Neymar, who revealed his pal's 'anguish' at having to stay with Liverpool.

"This had to be a moment of happiness for him for his family, but it is a moment of anguish, disappointment and sadness," said the PSG superstar.

"I wish Coutinho the best, I like to see him happy and happy, because he is a great friend that I have for a long time, when I see him sad, so am I."
