Fernando Torres couldn't help but show his excitement ahead of the Audi Cup final.

The Atletico Madrid striker, who represented Liverpool for four years - arguably the most productive period of his career - will come face to face with his former employers on Wednesday evening, and he's definitely looking forward to it.

Taking to Twitter ahead of the match, which will be held at Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena, the Spaniard wrote: "Can't wait to face the Reds!!!!!"

And it seems his message went down well with the Liverpool fans, despite him leaving the club for Chelsea back in 2011 and upsetting more than a few of them.

"Torres was the first transfer I was truly excited about after becoming a fan," tweeted one fan. "Devastated me when he left. Still respect him though."

While another added: "I love you Torres, my childhood hero." Even Liverpool's official Twitter account got in on the act, posting: "We meet again! Looking forward to it!"

Torres was a fans' favourite during his time on Merseyside, before he switched to Stamford Bridge in a £50million move.

He later transferred back to his boyhood club Atletico, and will face Liverpool as part of their pre-season tour ahead of the new season.

Jurgen Klopp's men go into the game full of confidence after recording a 3-0 win over Bayern Munich last time out.
