Manchester United are reportedly making contingency plans in case they are unable to agree a new deal with midfielder Ander Herrera .

The Spaniard's current deal at Old Trafford, with both sides yet to agree on a new deal, despite several months' worth of talks.

As things stand, the 28-year-old would be able to leave the club on a free transfer next summer and talk to overseas clubs from January, but the Mail report that the club are set to activate a 12-month extension in his current deal.

That would give the two sides more breathing room to thrash out new terms, with the Spain international said to be keen on staying at the club.

Herrera penned a four-year deal when he joined the club in a £30million transfer from Athletic Bilbao in 2014, with an optional fifth year baked into the contract.

The arrival of Nemanja Matic this summer initially dug into Herrera's playing time this season, but Paul Pogba's hamstring injury has opened the door for his inclusion.

Herrera has established himself as a fan favourite during his time at Old Trafford, having turned out 90 times in the Premier League for the Red Devils, netting ten times.

Jose Mourinho's side travel to Huddersfield on Saturday as they look to maintain their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.
