Manchester United are set to downplay Wayne Rooney's return to Old Trafford this Sunday - but they have a pretty good reason.

The club's all-time record goal scorer left the Red Devils for his boyhood club Everton in the summer, after 13 years of service.

He's started the new season in good form for the Toffees, bagging twice in their first four fixtures, and will no doubt be looking forward to returning to Old Trafford.

The Manchester United fans will additionally be pleased to see the 31-year-old back home, but it seems the club itself is a bit skeptical.

Back in 2013 Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford with his new club Real Madrid, and was received like the prodigal son.

His name was read out last by the stadium announcer - on the request of boss Sir Alex Ferguson - prompting a huge cheer from the home end.

It was hoped that the Portuguese would become distracted by the emotion of the day.

But it had the opposite effect as Ronaldo scored the winner in Real's 2-1 victory to knock the Manchester club out of the Champions League.

Hoping to avoid a repeat performance, Man United have decided against celebrating Rooney's return, reports the Daily Mail.

They have even opted to stick £75million forward Romelu Lukaku on the programme - for the joint benefit of the Everton supporters.
