Adnan Januzaj has revealed he 'did not have much of a relationship' with Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho before leaving to join Real Sociedad last month.

The midfielder is keen to prove Mourinho was wrong not to give him a chance to prove himself at Old Trafford, reports the Manchester Evening News .

Januzaj was farmed out on loan to Sunderland last season, and was unable to help the Black Cats avoid relegation to the Championship under David Moyes, who gave the 22-year-old his United debut in 2013.

"Obviously, he is a great trainer but I did not have much of a relationship with him," he told MEN Sport.

"I respect him a lot because he is the one who left the door open for me to leave Manchester United.

"What I want now is to prove that I am a good player and that they were wrong to let me go."

Januzaj signed a five-year deal with Sociedad and, as was the case with Memphis Depay's move to Lyon, a buy-back clause was included in the deal.

But the Belgian is not thinking about a return to Old Trafford. Not just yet, anyway.

"I want to grow with La Real and be a better player," he added. "That’s my goal for the future."

Ahead of United's trip to Sunderland, in April, Mourinho revealed he had made a decision on Januzaj's future.

The winger had just a year left on his contract at Old Trafford and struggled to catch the eye amid Sunderland's relegation troubles.

"I have decided but I am not telling you," Mourinho told reporters at the time.
