Manchester United fans are calling on Jose Mourinho to re-sign Javier Hernandez.

The Mexican striker represented the Red Devils from 2010 to 2015 - although he spent his last season on their books on loan at Real Madrid - before leaving for Bayer Leverkusen.

He gained a reputation as a super-sub at United, bagging important goals late in games for Sir Alex Ferguson's swashbuckling side.

But he saw his game time reduced when David Moyes took over the reins, before Louis van Gaal decided to part company with him.

The Dutchman was subsequently criticised for letting Chicharito go, but defended his decision in an interview with the Telegraph.

"We could have kept all the strikers, but then there would have been a lot of strikers in the stand," he said, back in 2016.

"They are not happy then. They want to go away. It is the story of Hernandez for example. He wants to play. I can imagine that he can't always play in this world."

Mourinho was named Manchester United boss ahead of last season, and he too hit out at Van Gaal's decision to sell Hernandez.

Providing a reason for a United goal-drought in April 2017, the Portuguese said: "I give you a simple example.

"In the way we play at Old Trafford, in the way we dominate opponents in the way we play in their box, I think Chicharito would have 20 goals easy.

"Even coming from the bench for the last 10 or 20 minutes, he will have 20 goals."

Manchester United are once again in need of some firepower, what with star striker Romelu Lukaku going through a rough patch.

And West Ham's Hernandez is just one player on the club's radar, along with Leicester City's Jamie Vardy and Alexis Sanchez of Arsenal.

While supporters would likely be pleased to see the Red Devils sign any of these three forwards, it seems many are calling for the return of their Prodigal Son.
