Manchester United look set to be without Chris Smalling for their Boxing Day clash with Burnley.

The defender picked up an injury in the closing stages of Saturday's draw with Leicester and did not arrive with the rest of the squad at The Lowry Hotel on Christmas night, reports the Manchester Evening News.

With Jose Mourinho having made all three substitutions, Smalling played through the pain barrier but that willingness backfired when Harry Maguire capitalised on his immobility to side-foot in a 94th-minute equaliser.

Matteo Darmian, who missed the Leicester draw with an unspecified injury, was also not spotted by M.E.N. photographers as players disembarked the team coach.

Victor Lindelof, Axel Tuanzebe, Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Scott McTominay and Luke Shaw were among other players not spotted by photographers getting off the team coach, but it is probable that the majority of those players will be included in Mourinho's matchday 18.

United trained at Old Trafford on Christmas Day evening after Mourinho gave the players permission to spend the morning and afternoon with their families and rather than train at the club's Carrington complex. The squad checked in at The Lowry following their evening session.

Antonio Valencia is set to miss the Burnley match with a hamstring injury, while Marouane Fellaini (knee), Michael Carrick (heart) and Eric Bailly (ankle) are all out.

Provisional squad: De Gea, Romero, Pereira, Jones, Blind, Rojo, Young, Herrera, Matic, Lingard, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Lukaku, Ibrahimovic, Rashford.
