5. Tough return to United for Joyce

For almost 45 minutes, former United reserve team boss Warren Joyce could be satisfied with a job well done, keeping his old club at bay.

But Fellaini’s header just before the break broke Wigan’s resolve and they crumbled thereafter.

Wigan’s priority this season is avoiding the drop into League One and it remains to be seen what impact this drubbing will have on their Championship form.

4. Mourinho shows strength of squad

Unlike other Premier League managers, who made wholesale changes and were dumped out of the FA Cup or just scraped through, Mourinho was able to reshuffle his personnel and still field a side capable of making it through.

The United boss made nine changes from the side that lost at Hull but still made it to the EFL Cup final, proving the strength of his squad.

3. Martial takes his chance

Mourinhio had warned Martial he needed to take his chance here, having been left out of United’s last two matchday squads, despite being fit. Martial overcame a poor start to justify his inclusion, providing the assists for United’s second and third goals and proving a potent attacking threat down the left side.

2. Shaw needs to do more

Luke Shaw was another United player brought in from the cold, making his first appearance since November 30.

Jose Mourinho has yet to be convinced by the £27million left-back and Shaw will need to do more than he did here to fully win over his boss.

Some bright moments were marred by some basic errors on the ball, although that was always likely after two months out.

1. Schweinsteiger overcomes shaky start

It was little surprise, having not started a game for 385 days, that Bastian Schweinsteiger was rusty

at the start. The German played a simple pass straight out of play and got robbed in possession on more than one occasion. But he improved thereafter and produced the cross for Marouane Fellaini to plunder United’s opener just before half-time and scored himself with 10 minutes left.

Schweinsteiger goal caps FA Cup stroll for Red Devils - 5 things we learned

Jose Mourinho made nine changes but saw his Manchester United side cruise into the fifth round of the FA Cup with a comfortable win over Wigan, writes David McDonnell.

Goals from Marouane Fellaini, Chris Smalling, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Bastian Scweinsteiger – making his first start for more than a year – saw Mourinho’s side through with no drama.

Mourinho was even afforded the luxury of being able to bring on third-choice keeper Joel Pereira for Sergio Romero with 10 minutes to go, with United leading 3-0.

So United remain in the hunt for four trophies, albeit they remain 14 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea and are ostensibly playing for a top-four place.

Skipper Wayne Rooney was presented with a golden ball and boot trophy before kick-off for reaching 250 United goals and overtaking Sir Bobby Charlton, who made the presentation.

Here are five things we learned from today’s encounter at Old Trafford...

Full-time: Manchester Untied 4-0 Wigan

For the opening 35 minutes, it looked a real contest with Wigan creating more chances than their illustrious counterparts.

But then Fellaini scored just before half-time and Manchester United accelerated away as the second half wore on, with Smalling, Mkhitaryan and Schweinsteiger making sure the scoreline was emphatic.

Wigan ran out of steam and by the end, the Red Devils could have had more.

Martial was excellent as was Schweinsteiger, after a slow start to the game.

The Latics can hold their heads high, with Morsy, Connolly and Power all enhancing their reputations.

But now it’s time for Wigan to concentrate on Championship survival - they’re in the drop zone right now - while Manchester United join the rather small Premier League contingent in the draw for the fifth round of the FA Cup.

GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED 4-0 Wigan (Schweinsteiger)

In from the cold, alive and kicking!

Bastian Schweinsteiger gets his name on the scoresheet for the Red Devils, at least one more time!

Herrera heads a cross towards the goal, Schweinsteiger receives it and hooks it over his shoulder with his left foot!

Goalkeeper Pereira makes his debut

It’s another debut for Manchester United, this time for goalkeeper Joel Castro Pereira.

He’s on in place of Romero.

Wigan make a final change

MacDonald makes way after busting a gut all afternoon. He’s replaced by Marcus Browne.

People may criticise Martial, but he has plenty of end product.

He has two assists today.

GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED 3-0 Wigan (Mkhitaryan)

Great goal by Manchester United.

Rooney plays the ball to Mkhitaryan as United cross the half-way line on the counter.

The Armenian finds Martial on the left and he returns the favour, feeing back to him at the near post.

This time Mkhitaryan makes no mistake, opening his foot out to guide the ball past Haugaard.

Fellaini makes way

Goalscorer Marouane Fellaini makes way for Ander Herrera and heads straight down the tunnel. Not sure if he has a knock?

Wigan also make a change with Ryan Tunincliffe on the for the Latics, in place of Will Grigg, who didn’t have much joy leading the line today.

Axel Tuanzebe makes his Manchester United debut

Youngster Axel Tuanzebe comes on in place of Timothy Fosu-Mensah to make his Manchester United debut.

The 18-year-old has been praised by Jose Mourinho and previously made it to the bench, but this is the first time he’s getting some game time.

But who is the defender?

Find out here!

Wigan make a change with David Perkins making way for Yanic Wildschut.

The visitors have been deflated by that second goal and now United are enjoying much more time with the ball, as Wigan legs get heavier and tracking runs gets harder.

GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED 2-0 Wigan (Smalling)

That is probably that, with Wigan now facing a mountain to climb if they want to get back into this.

Martial may want to be a centre-forward, but he proved he can be really effective on the wing, as he cuts in from the left before standing up a cross that Chris Smalling heads home.

Simple but effective!

Fellaini scores for Manchester United

The Belgian’s goal still separates the sides:

Romero nearly gifts Wigan a way back into the game!

United’s deputy keeper nearly put his side in all sorts of bother as he palmed the ball into the path of Perkins, but the Wigan man’s shot was well saved by the Argentine.

Then as United launched a counter attack through Martial, Burn blocked him off somewhat cynically, to pick up the first yellow card of the game.

Fosu-Mensah goes close!

The youngster has been getting forward well, but he just dragged his left-footed shot wide there.

A better start by United who needed to raise the tempo after their slightly laborious first half.

Schweinsteiger then goes close, but he’s eventually crowded out in the box.

Half-time: Manchester United 1-0 Wigan

So the Red Devils have the lead and now you would fully expect them to go on and win the game.

But the weekend has thrown up plenty of unexpected results already, so they can’t take anything for granted.

And the truth is that Wigan were hugely impressive.

Other than a missed chance by Mkhitaryan, United didn’t get going until Schweinsteiger combined with Fellaini for the goal.

The pair had both been getting some flack before the goal, but they proved Mourinho’s team selection right, at least so far!

GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 Wigan (Fellaini)

They may not deserve it, but Manchester United have the lead.

And it’s direct.

Schweinsteiger has had a poor game, but with space and the ball at his feet, he can pick out a head in the box, especially one as shaggy as Marouane Fellaini’s.

The German finds him at the back post and he leaps above Connolly to head home.

A bitter blow for Wigan, coming just before half-time.

Jacobs miscues!

Jacobs receives the ball in the Manchester United box, and has a yard of space.

But he swings and misses! A let off for Manchester United.

The Red Devils just can’t get going right now, but Wigan are having to work really hard to maintain this level of performance.

Manchester United toiling right now

This really hasn’t been a vintage performance by the Premier League giants.

But for Mkhitaryan’s glaring miss, they’ve done very little of note in opposition territory.

Martial’s cross was just well cut out by Connolly as the Red Devils tried to break on the counter.

The 19-year-old Everton loanee has been fantastic so far, in defence and attack!

Warren Joyce will be enjoying this.

Mkhitaryan should give Manchester United the lead!

How did he not score!

Manchester United break with numbers forward.

The ball is played to Fosu-Mensah on the right and he whips in a great ball across the face of the six yard box that finds its way through to Mkhitaryan, unmarked at the back post.

All it needs is a cushioned pass into the net. Instead he skies it over the bar!!
