Romelu Lukaku needed little more than half an hour to open his Manchester United account.

Having joined the Old Trafford club from Everton for £75million this summer, Lukaku was the benefactor of some good midfield play from Nemanja Matic and Marcus Rashford.

The striker than smashed the ball past Joe Hart, via the post, to send the famous ground into raptures.

And he repeated the trick seven minutes into the second half to effectively wrap up the points.

With full-time approaching, Anthony Martial made it 3-0 before Paul Pogba added some late gloss.

The result puts Jose Mourinho's side top of the Premier League after the opening weekend - will they be the real deal?

Bilic - It is hard to find any positives

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic had no excuses after his side suffered a 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

Bilic said:

I expected more of course. They were a better side in every aspect of the game.

They were better in the 50/50 challenges.

We could have done better today.

We didn’t want to get exposed because individually they have that quality.

It is very hard to find any positives when we have lost 4-0 but we have to be up for the next game.

They force you to go deeper but we allowed that.

They have too much time to get in behind and it was not good.

We knew they had a threat from set-pieces with four or five players and we practised that.

We switched to a 4-4-2 late on and put Sakho alongside Hernandez as he was isolated.

Sakho had a good chance but we conceded two goals late in the game.

We have to stay focused and we need to be more determined in the game.

Neville - United need a world class winger

Manchester United legend Gary Neville feels Jose Mourinho still needs to sign one more world class winger.

Neville said:

Is Rashford a wide player - not really?

That is where United could get one world class winger and it would be a complete squad.

They have spent a lot of money and there is no excuse for Manchester United not to challenge for the league.

They have to challenge this year.

Last season was not good enough and it was a big under performance from the players.

Mourinho - It was not a 4-0 game

Jose Mourinho felt the 4-0 scoreline flattered his side but was still thrilled to see his team get off to a winning start in the Premier League.

Mourinho said:

I don’t think it could have gone much better.

The game was difficult, it was open at 2-0 and they had a chance to score.

It was not a 4-0 game.

When you relax, you play with confidence.

We did not start especially well, we looked nervous but then we put in a quality performance.

A word that I like is confidence, they played with confidence and played football.

I am happy and it was a very positive performance.

It is always important for new players and new strikers and everyone expects goals from them.

It is nice for Rooney and Lukaku to score. It is nice for their confidence.

The fact that we start winning and top of the league doesn’t mean anything.

We lost two points against West Ham last season.

Today we scored goals and they are three important points.

Matic - We wanted to start well against a good side

Nemanja Matic says it was vital for his side to get off to a winning start in the Premier League.

Matic said:

It was an important game for us to start well against a good side.

They were compact until we scored the first goal.

I am very happy for the team as we started well and the next game we will play with more confidence.

The manager said I have to do my job like everyone in the team.

I am happy that everyone has given their best.

Lukaku - It is a dream come true

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku was thrilled to mark his debut with two goals and says it was a dream come true.

Lukaku said:

Of course to play in front of such a great crowd is a dream come true.

But the most important thing is the win and a clean sheet.

It is joy for the team.

When you play for United everyone has a job to do and mine is to score goals.

It is promising.

The manager wants me to be a leader for the team and the hard work will pay off.

The fans want to see attractive football and they were really pleased today.

This is just the start.

The manager has a plan and we need to follow that.

Bilic - We want to frustrate them

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic is confident his side can cause a big upset at Old Trafford.

Bilic said:

We have to be good without the ball.

We have to be solid and let them have the ball behind us or in the pockets.

When we have the ball we want to frustrate them and stretch them when we have the ball.

We have the players on the pitch capable of doing it.

Mourinho - West Ham will fight for a result

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is excited to finally start the Premier League season.

Mourinho said:

I am happy to start.

We like the opening match so let’s enjoy.

As a spectator, as a fan I have enjoyed the Friday match and some of the Saturday games.

Hopefully we can keep giving good football and entertaining fans.

We have enough for this match and to win it.

West Ham will fight for a result but we want to win.

Joe Hart takes pop at Pep Guardiola

Joe Hart has taken a swipe at Pep Guardiola by claiming the only club boss’ opinion he cares about is that of West Ham ’s Slaven Bilic.

The England keeper cannot wait to get started after sealing a loan switch from Manchester City to the Irons – and insists he has nothing to prove to Etihad chief Guardiola.

“I’m trying to make a point to Slaven Bilic – he’s my coach,” said Hart. “And to make my point to Gareth Southgate, the England boss. “They are the people whose opinions I really care about.

“City? I don’t think about that. I am a West Ham player now – that’s all I think about.

Fellow summer signings Joe Hart, Pablo Zabaleta and Marko Arnautovic also play their first Premier League games in a claret and blue shirt.

Romelu Lukaku is due to make his Manchester United debut this afternoon and with it comes more pressure on any game he has ever played before.

A £90m price tag sits on the Belgian’s head, can he justify it? United simply must challenge for the title or Jose Mourinho will be labelled a failure after spending another £150m.

Paul Pogba, Angel Di Maria, Anthony Martial, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata have arrived for huge money in recent years, but how did they get on?

We take a look at how United’s other marquee signings have fared on their Premier League debuts.

Man United boss Jose Mourinho must prove he truly is the special one and secured most valuable title of career

To some amusement in Skopje on Tuesday night, Jose Mourinho explained why he gave away his Super Cup losers’ medal.

“I don’t even keep all my winners’ medals, so imagine...” he said.

Even in defeat, even in a lovely gesture that made a young boy’s night, Mourinho can’t help reminding everybody how much he has won.

It was vintage Jose.

And he is, of course, a serial winner, particularly in his second season at clubs.

In that phase of his spells with Porto, Chelsea (twice), Inter Milan and Real Madrid, Mourinho won the league title, writes Andy Dunn.

Yes, the Super Cup remains a glorified exhibition match. Yes, Real Madrid are the best club team in Europe but Mourinho was still forced into the Fellaini ploy after all else had failed. There is a generation of coaches across Europe playing a brand of football far more attractive than that produced by Mourinho in recent times.

Ahead of the match, Mourinho had talked about United’s grand history.

“I want the team to be on a par with the club’s history,” he said.

To be on a par with the club’s history would mean not only contending for a 21st title but playing with the adventure and panache long associated with United.
