Dutch giants Ajax have announced the sacking of head coach Marcel Keizer, his assistant, Hennie Spijkerman, and Dennis Bergkamp.

Keizer arrived as replacement for Peter Bosz - following his defection to Borussia Dortmund - but hasn't impressed the club hierarchy despite the Amsterdam side currently being second in the Eredivisie, five points behind league leaders PSV Eindhoven.

However, last season's Europa League finalists were dumped out of the Champions League in the second qualifying round, before being embarrassed in the Europa League preliminaries by Rosenborg.

Ajax were also dumped out of the Dutch Cup in midweek, losing on penalties to FC Twente, but had won their previous three league games - including against leaders PSV and third place AZ.

Michael Reiziger has taken charge on an interim basis, ahead of the winter break.

A club statement read: "The club management does not have enough confidence that the ambitions of Ajax will be realised with them.

"The disappointing sporting results are also the reason for this decision. With Dennis Bergkamp, there is also a difference of opinion about the technical policy to be implemented.”

The Amsterdammers general manager, former Manchester United keeper Edwin van der Sar, says the club had lost confidence in the management team.

“We had a bad summer and a messy start to the season. From a sporting point of view, European elimination was the low point," explained Van der Sar.

"In particular Marc Overmars and I have frequently spoken the months afterwards about the permanent volatility of the first team. We are not confident that we will achieve the level that we are striving for with Ajax in this way. I regret this.

"Together with the Supervisory Board, we as management are grateful to Marcel, Dennis and Hennie for their efforts for the club.”

However, it is the departures of Spijkerman and Bergkamp in particular which hints at turmoil behind the scenes.

The Arsenal legend and the 67-year-old both returned to Ajax and played a key role during Frank de Boer's successful tenure.

Last season under Bosz, Bergkamp, 48, switched to a position working with the club's young players, no longer sitting on the bench during matches. There are suggestions that he clashed with his ex-Arsenal teammate Overmars about January transfer plans and playing style, as well as previously clashing with a number of former colleagues.

All three left the Johan Cruyff Stadium this afternoon after negotiating severance packages.
