Mauricio Pochettino praised “world-class” Harry Kane after the striker’s brace to finally end talk of a Spurs Wembley jinx.

Pochettino said: “He was fantastic. To score goals in the Champions League means he will get the credit he deserves. He is one of the best strikers in the world.

“The Champions League is one of the most important competitions in the world. It will give him the credit he deserves.

“It’s more than three points. It’s Wembley. It’s the perception that will be changed for our future. It’s so important for our fans and of course for us.”

Kane admitted on Tuesday that he’d given himself six Champions League games to justify comparisons with the best strikers in Europe.

The Tottenham’s England hitman started superbly with two outstanding finishes - in the 15th minute and on the hour - to shatter suggestions that his side bottle it at at the national stadium.

Son Heung Min opened the scoring after four minutes with a superb near-post strike.

Andriy Yarmolenko responded in style seven minutes later, curling an outstanding effort into the top corner, then Kane took centre stage.

The win for Spurs was only their second win in their past 12 games at Wembley. Pochettino added: “That win here is so important. Thats why for me, more than to talk about the good performance. Its the three points and the perception that we can do it in the future.

“Maybe people will stop talking about hoodoos and the like that as they have been for the past year. Its fantastic not only because of three points. I hope it will start to stop the things that are around the team.”

Spurs were fortunate to have a legitimate goal from Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ruled out for offside.

Their night was soured, however, in injury time when Italian referee Gianluca Rocchi sent off Jan Vertonghen for a hand in the face of substitute Mario Gotze.

Pochettino said: “I think it was not the intention of Jan. He told us. But his performance was very good and its a shame he received that second yellow card.”

Tottenham now sit second in Group H behind Real Madrid, conquerors of Apoel Nicosia.

Pochettino’s side now travel to Cyprus to face Apoel on September 26 hoping to build on their impressive return to the Champions League.
