Things just aren't bright and rosy at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea title defence derails and Champions League bid falters.

It is just six short months since the Blues lifted the Premier League title, but they are already nine points adrift of table topping Manchester City, having lost three games.

Tuesday night's humiliating 3-0 defeat to Roma in Europe won't have helped the mood around west London either - with the performance even worse than the one-sided scoreline.

Things just don't seem right with boss Antonio Conte at the moment.

The Italian seems to be cutting a frustrated figure both on the touchline and in press conferences, and with Cesar Azpilicueta recently admitting that dressing room morale was low, thoughts have turned to Conte's future.

He isn't likely to leave any time soon, but if he did in the summer, who could come in to replace him?

Well here are five candidates.

The returning one: Carlo Ancelotti

Fancy it, Carlo? (

As they've shown in the past with both Jose Mourinho and Guus Hiddink, Chelsea aren't averse to a blast from the past returning to their dugout.

Ancelotti - sacked by Bayern earlier this season - was in attendance at Chelsea's Champions League clash with Roma, and was a favourite of the Blues fans when he was in the hot seat between 2009 and 2011.

Stranger things have happened.

The exciting one: Thomas Tuchel

Without a job since leaving Borussia Dortmund in the summer, German boss Tuchel is a figure who is highly prized across Europe, and surely features on several clubs' wishlists.

Whether he'd be willing to wait until next summer for a job remains to be seen, but his appointment would certainly herald a change of approach at Stamford Bridge.

The one that makes the most sense: Diego Simeone

The Atletico Madrid boss cuts a brooding, almost menacing figure on touchlines both in Spain and across Europe, and there is something about his personality that would seem to fit the Blues well.

He's almost certain to leave Atletico at the end of this season, with Italy tipped as his most likely destination, but a mega offer from Roman Abramovich could change that.

The one whose turn it might be: Massimiliano Allegri

With their past appointments of Ancelotti, Mourinho (the second time) and Conte, Chelsea seem to have prioritised success in Italy as one of the main criteria they consider when handing over the keys to Stamford Bridge, and so three-time Serie A winner Allegri might be next up.

He did, however, sign a new contract at Juventus earlier this year, and so any move for his services will be an expensive one.

The left-field one: Julian Nagelsmann

Hoffenheim's highly-rated 30-year-old coach has been widely tipped to join Bayern Munich next season, but Chelsea have come knocking for exciting young European coaching talents before, and it usually works.

Mourinho and Andre Villas-Boas were both considered the next big thing before they took the Stamford Bridge job, and it could well be that Abramovich makes a similar call with Nagelsmann, getting one over Bayern in the process.
