Paul Scholes has warned Manchester United that their place in the top four is not confirmed.

United could enter the new year 17 points off leaders Manchester City - weeks after they had looked like their closest challengers.

A goalless draw with Southampton - complete with lacklustre performance - on Saturday was the third Premier League game in a row where Jose Mourinho's men walked away with just one point.

United legend Scholes is concerned that if performances carry on in this fashion, the Red Devils could miss out on the top four for the fourth time in five seasons.

“They need to liven up this team because top four isn’t guaranteed for me at this stage,” Scholes told BT Sport.

“There are some good teams in there. Tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, they will all be challenging for top four.

“They need to find some energy from somewhere and the manager needs to give them something.

“You look at players like (Paul) Pogba, (Nemanja) Matic… they are top players, but they are under performing.

“These players are good enough to win games. These players are worth a lot of money: Martial, Pogba. They are under-performing.

“It is a lack of urgency to me. It seems like they are winning 3-0 every game and they don't need to score a goal. There is not fight.

“Where is the Paul Pogba we saw at Juventus? He was all over the pitch, he was battling, he was tackling, he was sprinting to people, he was scoring goals from 25 yards out.

“He is just strolling through games.”

Scholes added: “Pogba doesn't look fit. I wonder whether he is training properly.

“He does not look like a player who will win you games and that is what you pay £90m for.

“No-one in England should be getting near him, but he is being asked to do a role he is not comfortable in.

“You have to say the manager has to take responsibility for that.

“Is the manager sending them out not playing the way they want to play? I don’t know.”
