Pep Guardiola fears Benjamin Mendy will be out for months after revealing he has a knee ligaments injury.

Mendy was on crutches for last night’s match at the Etihad as Manchester City recorded a seventh straight win to take control of their Champions League group.

The France defender will fly to Barcelona today to see Guardiola’s favourite specialist Dr Ramon Cugat and the City boss says he may have to buy a new left-back in January.

“Tomorrow he’s travelling to Barcelona and we will see finally what he has,” said Guardiola. “Our first impression is that it will it be a little longer than we expected.

“It’s very frustrating for him first as a person. Like with Gundogan last year, I feel sorry for him. We would miss him a lot, it would be a major setback.

“We will see what we do in January. We thought next summer about looking for another left-back. We have Danilo, Delph and Zinchenko who can play there so we will see as we go along.”

Guardiola shrugged off Sergio Aguero’s penalty miss, which would have seen him equal Eric Brook’s tally as City’s all-time top scorer, insisting the striker will still break the record.

“That’s going to happen,” said the Catalan. “It doesn’t matter if it’s today or tomorrow. He doesn’t need 50 goals to break a record, just one.”

City have won their opening two group games for the first time and Guardiola wants them to push on.

“Sooner or later this kind of thing was going to happen in the club,” he said. “We beat an amazing team and now we’re going to try to make three in a row.”
