Vincent Kompany is back training with Manchester City after recovering from his calf injury.

Boss Pep Guardiola feared the City skipper and defensive linchpin could be out for weeks and he has missed the Blues’ last two games.

But Guardiola revealed he trained today and is in contention to face West Brom in the League Cup on Wednesday.

“Today Vinnie came back and trained with us,” said the City boss. “I think in the next days he will be able to play again.”

Guardiola also claimed Yaya Toure can play an important role for City this season, despite not managing a single minute of action so far this season.

Toure has not made Guardiola's matchday squads for City’s last two games and it is understood the Spaniard wants the veteran midfielder, who signed a new one-year deal in the summer, to work harder.

Guardiola insists the door is still open for him to force his way back into his plans.

“I need him,” he said. “We need him. He was so important last season. He'll be so important this season.

“It’s about the group and he’s a player I admire for what he has done in his career.

“He is an exceptional player."

When asked if the Ivorian will feature in the squad for Saturday’s trip to Watford , Guardiola said: “In the last game, he was not in the squad. We will see.”
