Pep Guardiola has assured Arsene Wenger his Invincibles record is safe – after admitting Manchester City cannot go the entire Premier League season unbeaten.

Arsenal created history in the 2003-04 season by going the whole season unbeaten, with 26 wins and 12 draws, the only time the feat has been achieved in the modern era.

City remain unbeaten this season, with nine wins and a draw, but Guardiola is adamant his side will lose at some stage of the domestic campaign, meaning Arsenal's record is safe.

Wenger's side travel to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday and Guardiola said: "Arsene's record belongs to him. We're not going to break it. He has to be calm.

“It was an exceptional team, something fantastic. We don't want to break this record but we want to play good and beat them on Sunday.

"We're five points ahead, with how many games left? 28? How many points is that? 84?

“So 84 points to play for and we're five in front. If we play until next May like we have in the last two months, I'd say 'wow, we have a good chance'.

“But who's going to assure me we won't get injuries? Even for the very best teams it's hard to maintain.”

Sunday's game is the first meeting between the two clubs since City failed with a £60million deadline day bid for Alexis Sanchez.

But Guardiola has not ruled out signing Sanchez – who is out of contract at the end of this season – on a free transfer next summer.

"The strikers we have are going to stay next season,” said Guardiola.

“Maybe we will add - we're going to decide. Next season we have to shape the team again.

“Last season there was a lot, because the average age was 28 or 29. Now we're a young team. But we'll buy players, we'll try to analyse and buy the right players.

"He [Sanchez] is an Arsenal player, his manager has to speak about him. We know the situation, it was open and now it's closed.

“He's an Arsenal player, so important for them with the talent he has, and we have to try to control him.

“Bu the transfer window is closed, so it's not time to talk about it. I have respect for Arsenal and my own players.

“It's not time - you know my opinion on the players I have, on Alexis you know my opinion, but he's an Arsenal player - so it's not time especially when we play them."
