West Brom target Michael O'Neill has put all talks over his future on hold after his mother sadly passed away.

The Northern Ireland boss, who took his side agonisingly close to a place in next year's World Cup in Russia, had been due to hold talks over the Scotland job later this week and had also been linked with the Baggies after they sacked under fire Tony Pulis this morning.

O'Neill has credited the support from his family as key behind his success as a manager, but was concerned over his mother's ill health in the build up to Northern Ireland's World Cup play-off against Switzerland and rushed from his side's base to be by her side as her condition deteriorated.

She sadly died last night, and all talks over O'Neill's managerial future will be put to one side for a number of days until he is ready to resume work.

When previously asked about the prospect of managing in the Premier League , the 48-year-old said: "The direction a club goes now, I'm not sure the manager has influence.

"When I think would I want to be in that environment, of course you see the big games and you love that environment and atmosphere.

"But it's a very difficult scenario because things can go against you in two or three games that are not necessarily down to how you've prepared the team. Things can go against you and ultimately it can cost you your job."

O'Neill is wary of how things can quickly turn in the top flight, and was reportedly keen on the Scotland job before the untimely family bereavement having been given permission to speak to the Scottish FA about the post.
