Real Madrid can be the first team since AC Milan in 1990 to retain the Super Cup when they take on Manchester United in Skopje on Tuesday evening.

Jose Mourinho's side stand in their way after winning their Europa League last season.

The game is nicely poised with both teams having had busy summers assembling their squads.

Manchester United spent £75million on Romelu Lukaku while also signing Swedish defender Victor Lindelöf Real Madrid, meanwhile, have spent big on youngsters Theo Hernandez and Dani Ceballos.

But which players would make the cut if you could pick just one starting line-up from both squads?

Here we take a look at a combined XI that will undoubtedly cause debate.

Most people will be in agreement that David De Gea get the number one shirt in this line up. Real Madrid have been trying to make him their goalkeeper for years now.

With both clubs huge admirers of the Spaniard, there really isn't a contest here.

Dani Carvajal earned many plaudits last season after a string of impressive performances. Antonio Valencia provided stern competition for this place however with Carvajal being just 25 and Spain's first choice right back, he just edges this one.

Centre back: Sergio Ramos, Real Madrid

Sergio Ramos is considered one of the best centre backs in the world. His dominance in the air makes him a major threat from set pieces. This as well as his vast experience at the heart of the Real Madrid back line makes him one of the first names on the team sheet.

Injury plagued much of Eric Bailly's season last term however when Bailly did feature for United, he was often outstanding. In his first month at the club, he was voted 'Player of the month' after picking up the Man of the Match award in United's first two games of last season.

Marcelo was widely regarded as one of Real Madrid's best players last season. His ability to get forward so often from left-back is incredible and he has formed a formidable partnership down the left with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Centre midfield: Toni Kroos and Luka Modric, Real Madrid

This is one of the best centre midfield partnerships football has come across. Both the German, Kroos, and the Croatian, Modric, are exceptional with the ball at their feet. Their eye for a pass is something not many can replicate. Modric in particular excelled in the Champions League final.

Attacking midfield: Paul Pogba, Manchester United

The second most expensive player in football history makes this team on his talent alone. Paul Pogba struggled at times last season to settle back into the Premier League. However the foundations are firmly in place for him to exceed next season. He was excellent in the Europa League final.

Right wing: Gareth Bale, Real Madrid

Many were surprised not see Gareth Bale start in the Champions League final; the form of Isco ensured he could only have a place on the bench. Injury has blinded people to how good Bale actually is, people forget he was the world's most expensive player. He is capable of changing a game in an instant.

Centre forward: Romelu Lukaku, Manchester United

Although unproven at European level, Romelu Lukaku's pace and power will be a major asset to Manchester United. Still at only 24 years of age, there is still chance for further improvement for Lukaku to build on how good he already is.
