With 12 goals conceded from their opening seven Premier League matches this season, there is no surprise that fingers are being pointed at Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool defence.

The Reds are down in seventh place in the table, seven points behind the Manchester clubs, with question marks being asked about why the German didn't see fit to snap up a central defender this summer.

Liverpool were frustrated in their attempts to sign Southampton's Virgil van Dijk , but many were left wondering why he was the only target.

But as we learned on the new Mirror Football podcast, Klopp passed up the opportunity to snap up a defender who excelled under him at Borussia Dortmund.

As revealed by the Sunday Mirror's chief sports reporter Tom Hopkinson, Liverpool had the chance to move for Neven Subotic, the Serbian centre-back who won back-to-back Bundesliga titles under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund in 2011 and 2012.

But with the defender having struggled for fitness in each of the last two seasons, they declined to go through with it.

When asked if there were defenders Liverpool could have signed this summer, Hopkinson said: "Oh there were lots.

"I'm not saying don't go for Van Dijk. Van Dijk is an excellent defender, but when that failed surely there was somebody could have they picked up for £20m. Subotic, or somebody like that.

"There was a mandate to try and bring Subotic to the Premier League during the transfer window.

"He might not be the answer to Liverpool's problems, and he might still have a rick in him. He's not got Premier League experience, but was it worth a gamble given how flaky we knew Liverpool's defence were last season."
