Robbie Savage was rescued from the grips of an angry BBC 606 caller by none other than his mother... who then went on to embarrass him.

Former Blackburn and Leicester City star Savage was accused of being a Manchester United fan after predicting that they would win the Premier League this season.

The notion was immediately rebuffed by both the pundit and his mum, who insisted her boy was a Wrexham supporter.

"I agree with a lot of things you've said," began Mrs Savage. "But when you said he's a Man United fan you're talking a lot of b***, he's a Wrexham fan through and out."

However, Mrs Savage did confess that her son was also something of a Liverpool supporter when he joined Manchester United, and that he had an Ian Rush shirt pinned on his bedroom wall.

A fairly red-faced Savage insisted that the jersey was a Juventus one in an attempt to clarify the situation.

After reiterating that her boy was definitely a whole-hearted Wrexham fan, the caller then apologised to the Mirror Football columnist's mother.
