Robert Pires has comically apologised to former Arsenal teammate Thierry Henry over THAT penalty gaffe.

In 2005, The Gunners legends produced one of the Premier League's most embarrassing moments when their cheeky stunt backfired.

After earning a spot kick against Manchester City, Pires stepped up to 'take it'. However, the Frenchman attempted to pass the ball to Henry so his pal could score.

Pires merely brushed the ball meaning it didn't move from its original spot, causing Henry to run past the ball. The referee awarded a free-kick in the opposite direction.

"Of course I still remember. I missed the ball!" said Pires speaking to Copa 90 . "I don't know what happened in my head. It was like a blackout.

"The ref, he said, 'Free-kick, against you'. I said, 'No, I need to retake it because I didn't touch the ball'.

"But the ref insisted I had."

Replays do indeed show the ball moving, backing up what the referee had seen.

Pires added: "The idea was from Thierry Henry, but it was my mistake. Sorry Thierry Henry!"
