Romelu Lukaku apparently did everything he could to upset the fans of his former club as Manchester United battered Everton 4-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Belgium international gestured to the away fans with a finger to the lips after setting up Henrikh Mkhitaryan to make it 2-0 in the second half.

He later cupped his ears at them after making it 3-0 - something he described as "banter" - but in someways saved his best to last.

In the dying embers of the match Man United were awarded a spot-kick and the job of making it 4-0 was handed to Anthony Martial.

Lukaku, who missed a penalty against Leicester City, seemed happy to pass on the responsibility to his teammate, and was apparently very sure he'd score.

Replays on Sky Sports showed the Belgian standing behind Martial as he attempted to slot the ball past Jordan Pickford in the Everton goal.

And lifting his arms in celebration the moment the ball left the former Monaco man's foot, anticipating that it would indeed hit the back of the net.

Fortunately for Lukaku, Martial dispatched his penalty with ease, sending the England shot-stopper the wrong way, to make it 4-0.

Jose Mourinho spoke proudly about his team's performance following the game, and explained why Martial had been instructed to take the spot-kick.

"The penalty-taker today was Juan Mata," the Portuguese told Sky Sports. "But he was out so I let the players take the decision.

"It is nice for Anthony Martial, fine for me, no problem."
