Ronald Koeman believes Wayne Rooney can fill a number of positions in his new-look Everton side.

Rooney was officially unveiled as an Everton player in a press conference on Monday after completing an emotional return to Goodison Park.

The 31-year-old has rejoined his boyhood club after a frustrating season at Manchester United, spending a large chunk of the campaign on the bench.

There had been suggestions Rooney would also struggle to fit into Koeman's first-choice XI given Everton's significant outlay on new players with more expected.

But after hailing Rooney's arrival, Koeman insisted he still has the ability to fulfill a number of roles.

"Everybody knows the qualities of Wayne. He's really that striker to play with that character," Koeman said.

"Offensively he can be a 10 behind the striker, in a free role from the left, a nine, a seven... they are the positions where Wayne will play."

Discussing his ambitions for next season, Koeman added: "It is still too soon to talk about top four.

"You cannot do it in one season. The first season was to get good results and play good football. Now, we need to make the next step.

"That experience to win titles is one of the reasons we wanted to bring Wayne back."
