Ryan Giggs has been interviewed by Wales but faces an angry backlash from unhappy fans to his potential appointment.

FAW chief Jonathan Ford has interviewed bookies favourite Giggs, Craig Bellamy, Chris Coleman's assistant Osian Roberts and Mark Bowen.

Wales are searching for a new boss after Coleman's shock decision in November to quit for Sunderland despite being offered a new deal.

Wales now need a new man to attempt to lead them to Euro 2020 after missing out on the World Cup.

Manchester United legend Giggs, 44, made 64 appearances for his country from 1991-2007, including 10 friendlies.

But after making his debut against Germany in 1991, he did not play in a friendly until Wales' first match at the Millennium Stadium in 2000.

His perceived willingness to prioritise United over Wales caused resentment.

He upset fans again recently when he was a TV pundit for England's game against Brazil on the same night Wales hosted Panama in November.

Fans yesterday called talkSPORT to complain at the prospect of Giggs succeeding Coleman.

Lewis phoned in to insist: “I don't think anyone in Wales wants Ryan Giggs as the Wales manager. Giggs was unavailable for Wales but always available for Sir Alex Ferguson.”

Gareth moaned: “When it comes to Wales there is no commitment there. The joke is would he turn up for friendlies?”

Caller James said: “Giggs never had Wales truly in his heart. He was on the TV watching England, he should be watching Wales instead."

Bellamy, 38, who won 78 caps for his country from 1998-2013, is working as Championship Cardiff's player development manager and has coached some of Wales' younger squads.

Roberts has support among the existing squad to team up in a new-look management team, possibly with ex-international midfielder Carl Robinson, who is in charge of Vancouver in the MLS.

A well-respected coach, Bowen won 41 Wales caps and was assistant manager of his country during Mark Hughes’ time in charge.

It is now anticipated that a decision will be made quickly with Giggs the frontrunner.

The 44-year-old, who has been out of work since leaving his role as United’s No2 in 2016, admitted last month that he was interested in replacing Coleman and described managing Wales as “one of the top jobs”.

Wales do not play again until March when they are to participate in the China Cup in the Far East.

But a new manager is due to be appointed before the Uefa Nations League draw takes place in Switzerland on January 24.
