Steven Gerrard has backed an English team to win the Champions League this season, but it's not his old side.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool beat Maribor 7-0 on Tuesday night, breaking the record for largest away win by an English side in the competition, but Gerrard feels one of their domestic rivals is the real favourite for the competiton.

Gerrard, who lifted the trophy himself in 2005, believes Pep Gaurdiola's Manchester City are the team to beat.

City beat Feyenoord 4-0 in their first game, won 2-0 against Shakhtar Donetsk in their second and then picked up three points against Napoli in their third.

Appearing on BT Sport, Gerrard said: "Some of them got kind groups so you’d expect them to progress, but they’ve been doing well.

"The statement performance was City against a good Napoli side. City look real big favourites in this competition for me."

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand added: "The last few years have been a bit of a transition [for the English clubs in Europe].

"Now money has been spent and it’s coming to fruition for them. The teams are starting to form a bond together and long may that success continue."
