David Unsworth is the perfect replacement for Ronald Koeman in the Goodison Park dugout if his response to the Z-car theme is anything to go by.

When Unsworth was named the Everton interim manager, a group of die-hard Evertonians dug up a 2006 fans’ Q&A to see what he’d said about the club in 2006, in the middle of what would be a two year stint at Sheffield United.

The primary focus was on his answer to “Can you put into words how good it feels to pull on the blue jersey and run out to Z-Cars?”.

The Toffees run out to the theme to the classic 1960s and 1970s TV drama series based on a fictional version of Kirby.

Unsworth replied: “I recently played at Watford [for Sheffield United], where they play Z-Cars as well, and for two seconds I thought I was in an Everton shirt again and the hairs were up on my neck!”

Defender Unsworth spent two highly successful spells at the Toffees as a player - making 314 outings for the club.

After retiring from his playing career in 2009, Unsworth joined Preston as a coach before finally making a third return to Goodison Park in 2013 - originally as under 21 assistant manager.

In the questionnaire he predicted his comeback. To the question “Would you come back a third time if you were asked?” he wrote an underlined “YES."

Unsworth will have the opportunity to audition for the Everton job full-time against Chelsea on Wednesday night - as the Toffees face the Blues in the Carabao Cup.
