Another defeat for Everton - but at least they are showing some fight.

Literally in skipper Ashley Williams’ case and he sparked a mass melee when he shoved over Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.

A couple of Blues fans tried to get involved and one threw a punch at Lopes, incredibly while holding a child in the other arm.

Williams briefly lost it as he took on all-comers and the centre-half was fortunate to escape with just a booking along with Lyon’s matchwinner Bertrand Traore.

Williams headed Everton level a couple of minutes later before Traore’s backheeled winner and the Wales star played down his moment of madness.

“It’s football,” he said. “It is what it is. We want to win and so do they. These things happen.

“The pressure you put on yourself is bigger than anything outside. We want to show fight for ourselves, the club and fans.”

Lopes said caustically: “I don’t know if it’s part of the English atmosphere to hit an away player, but it was like this.”

Ronald Koeman admitted “maybe” he was in a crisis before this game.

There’s no maybe about it after he saw Everton slump to their sixth defeat in 10 games and be booed off again.

Everton have made the worst start to a group campaign in the Europa League and Craig Shakespeare was sacked at Leicester for less.

Koeman claims he still has the backing of the board and few chairmen are as supportive as Bill Kenwright.

But even the impresario’s patience must be wearing thin with Koeman starring in his own version of Brewster’s Millions, having blown £150million to take Everton backwards.

Despite Everton’s need to win, the Dutchman made five changes with an eye on Sunday’s clash with Arsenal and Wayne Rooney watched from the stands.

Everton took their cue from Koeman’s team selection and they could not have looked more dozy if they were tucked up in bed with a hot water bottle.

Lyon, despite missing five regulars, including seven-goal striker Mariano Diaz, seized control.

Even Memphis Depay looked sharp and the former Manchester United winger slipped in Marcal on the left for Mason Holgate to cut him down in a suicidal challenge.

Skipper Nabil Fekir dispatched the penalty beyond Jordan Pickford. Six minutes gone and already Everton were 1-0 down.

Everton slowly recovered and Tom Davies played in Kevin Mirallas, only for the Belgian to be denied by Lopes.

The game opened up and Davies nearly scored an own goal when he headed Depay’s free-kick against the bar.

Pickford prevented Everton losing by more and he denied Maolida before all hell broke loose when Williams shoved Lopes out of play as he caught the ball.

Williams thought he had his revenge on 69 minutes when he headed home Sigurdsson’s free-kick unmarked and the Icelandic hit the post from a free-kick as Everton pushed for a winner.

But then Lyon substitute Maxwel Cornet beat Williams and crossed for Traore to backheel a cheeky winner on 75 minutes.

The agony for Everton and Koeman goes on.
