Mauricio Pochettino will keep his players focused on Brighton by picking a full strength team for Wednesday's match.

Tottenham face Manchester City on Saturday evening, but their boss insists he will pay maximum respect to Chris Hughton’s visitors when the sides meet at Wembley.

That clash at the Etihad is a chance to chip away at leaders City’s 18-point advantage over Spurs. But Pochettino maintains he is thinking solely about the Seagulls, not the weekend.

He said: “I think the most important game is this one. If I rest players, it could seem like we are not focusing on Brighton and I don’t want to make that mistake.”

Key defender Jan Vertonghen is just one booking away from a suspension, but Pochettino maintains there is little point in worrying himself out of playing the Belgian.

He added: “That decision I never like to take.

“Sometimes it happens that you want to avoid something like this and the day before on the training pitch the player gets injured but the player is still one yellow card off a ban and still doesn’t play. It is a tricky situation.”

Spurs ended a four-match winless run in the Premier League by beating Stoke 5-1 on Saturday.

But they have been hit by a blow, with the news that their best defender, Toby Alderweireld, is out until February.

The Belgian underwent a scan on the hamstring, which has kept him sidelined since the Champions League win over Real Madrid at the start of November.

The hope had been that he would be back this month, but he is now a doubt for a run of key fixtures in the New Year.

Spurs play consecutive league games against Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal, followed by the Champions League last-16 first-leg away to perennial Italian title winners Juventus.

Pochettino — also without banned centre-back Davinson Sanchez for this week's two games — added: "I think with him or without him, we win and we lose. Of course the manager always wants all the players to be fit to play, like (Victor) Wanyama, Danny Rose or (Erik) Lamela before.

"Always you are going to miss the players that are not fit, but that is normal. But for me football is about the team, it is not about individual players.”
