Harry Winks has been given his first England senior call-up.
Tottenham midfielder Winks, 21, was drafted in by Gareth Southgate after Fabian Delph and Phil Jones both went back to their clubs with injuries.
Manchester City midfielder Delph and Manchester United defender Jones missed training at St George’s Park and are out of the qualifiers with Slovenia and Lithuania.
But it does now give a remarkable chance to Tottenham prospect Winks who has started the last two games for Spurs and was promoted from the under-21s.
Tottenham pulled him out of the under-21s last month as it was felt Winks was still recovering from an ankle injury suffered at the end of last season.
But Winks is now back to full fitness and has clearly done enough to impress Gareth Southgate.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has called Winks Tottenham’s mini-Andres Iniesta.
Southgate sees him as a major player for the future as central midfield is a massive problem for England which is why Delph was brought in from the cold.
Winks is yet another of Tottenham's England generation to break through as he joins Harry Kane, Dele Alli, and Kieran Trippier in the squad while Danny Rose is also a regular when fit.
"Harry's done great," Kane said of Winks. "He's waited patiently for his chance. He's just got to keep doing what he's doing, keeping his head down.
"He had a great game in midweek in the Champions League [against Apoel Nicosia], he had a great game on Saturday [against Huddersfield].
"For him, he's just got to stay focused, not think about it too much, just concentrate on his job, and what'll happen will happen.
"[Winks is] a great player. On the ball, technically he's fantastic. He reads the game very well, he can drive past players."
