Vincent Kompany is a serious doubt for Manchester City's meeting with Liverpool.

The Belgian centre-half suffered a blow to the knee during his country's thrashing of Gibraltar, but it is a calf problem - felt in the lead up to their win over Greece last Sunday - that is causing consternation at the Etihad.

City had been confident that the club captain - who has started all three of their Premier League games so far this term - would be fit enough to take on Jurgen Klopp's Reds.

But Kompany has not trained during the last two days and looks increasingly likely to miss out on Saturday, particularly with the Champions League around the corner.

City play Liverpool just four days before they kick off their European campaign against Feyenoord.

Club officials believe they have finally resolved the muscular issues that have plagued the 31-year-old during the last three years.

But Kompany made just 15 appearances for the club last term and City doctors are reticent to throw him in against Liverpool's lightning-quick attack unless he is 100 per cent.

If Kompany is absent, City could well switch to a back four, with Benjamin Mendy in line to make his home debut after missing the start of the season with a thigh strain.

“It’s a huge game,” he said. “I’m excited and really looking forward to play my first home match. I came to the Premier League to play in matches of this calibre."
