Wayne Rooney cut a bleak figure as he was chauffeured into training.

The Everton striker was banned for the road for two years for a drink-diving conviction after he was found three times over the legal limit.

Rooney was driven to training on Tuesday morning, as he begins preparations for the club's League Cup clash with Sunderland on Wednesday night.

The Toffees have lost their last four matches, having failed to score in each, with pressure now mounting on manager Ronald Koeman.

Koeman's situation hasn't been helped by ex-England captain Rooney, banned from driving for two years after he admitted the offence in court on Monday.

It is Rooney's first return to Finch Farm since formally being fined two weeks' wages by the club.

The 31-year-old was stopped by police while driving a black Volkswagen Beetle in Wilmslow - as exclusively revealed by Mirror Sport.

His breathalyser reading was 104, almost three times the legal limit of 35.

Rooney was also issued with a 12-month community order by the court, with 100 hours of unpaid community work.

The former Manchester United striker has since released statement apologising to Everton fans.

"Following today's court hearing I want publicly to apologise for my unforgivable lack of judgement in driving while over the legal limit. It was completely wrong," read a statement from England's record goalscorer.

"I have already said sorry to my family, my manager and chairman and everyone at Everton FC. Now I want to apologise to all the fans and everyone else who has followed and supported me throughout my career.

"Of course I accept the sentence of the court and hope that I can make some amends through my community service."

Rooney returned to Manchester United at the weekend, but was substituted during Everton's 4-0 defeat to his former club.
