Fans have taken to Twitter to have their say on Wayne Rooney retiring from international football.
The Everton striker tallied 119 caps for England and scored 53 goals along the way, becoming the Three Lions' all-time top goalscorer.
Rooney last featured for Gareth Southgate's side on 11 November, starting in England's 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Scotland.
The striker burst onto the international scene in February 2003, becoming, at the time, the youngest player to play for England.
At the age of 17 years and 111 days, Rooney came on at half-time against Australia to make his debut.
Rooney then went on to become the youngest scorer in the history of the Euros, notching twice against Switzerland in a 3-0 Euro 2004 victory.
The 31-year-old went on to play in five more major international tournaments, but could never replicate the success he had in his first.
In a statement to Press Association Sport, Rooney said: ''It was great that Gareth Southgate called me this week to tell me he wanted me back in the England squad for the upcoming matches.
"I really appreciated that. However, having already thought long and hard, I told Gareth that I had now decided to retire for good from international football.
"It is a really tough decision and one I have discussed with my family, my manager at Everton and those closest to me.
"Playing for England has always been special to me. Every time I was selected as a player or captain was a real privilege and I thank everyone who helped me. But I believe now is the time to bow out."
