Wayne Rooney's plan to teach kids football as part of his community service has suffered a blow.

The former England captain, who turns 32 tomorrow, was banned from the roads for two years last month after he admitted to a drink-drive charge in which he was three times over the legal limit.

He was ordered to serve 100 hours of paid work as part of a 12-month community order.

Rooney had wanted to teach children football - like did Eric Cantona when he was given 120 hours of community service for karate kicking a fan.

However it takes 28 days for necessary checks to confirm his suitability to work with children - and community service starts a week after sentencing.

This has meant that Rooney has had to work at the same the garden centre where former Manchester United team mate Carlos Tevez was ordered to work after he was banned four years ago.

Earlier this month the £150,000-a-week star was chauffeured to his shift at the centre, near his £6million home in Prestbury, Cheshire.

At 8.40am, he walked in wearing a blue jacket, blue hoodie, matching blue bottoms and black Nike trainers.

He had already completed two days of work – at least 12 hours.

Once there, Rooney, who turns 32 tomorrow, put on a green zip-up fleece, worn by colleagues and spent all his time inside.

The ex-England and Manchester United skipper has been given routine maintenance tasks as disadvantaged adults around him learn new skills, including plant potting, and woodwork.

Their efforts are displayed and sold at the centre.

Staff and trainees enjoyed a game of badminton before locking up.

Rooney left at 3.04pm, wearing his wedding ring. He strolled outside to his waiting driver who had been parked for 90 minutes.

Rooney has told pals he is more than happy to work there.

After he was sentenced last month, he apologised and added: “I accept the court’s decision and hope I can make amends through my community service.”

Rooney was arrested in the early hours of September 1 as he drove a VW Beetle belonging to Laura Simpson, 29, in the passenger seat.

They had met in a bar in Wilmslow while his pregnant wife Coleen was on holiday with their three children.

When stopped by police at 2am, over a faulty tail light, he had 104mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The limit is 35mcg.

Rooney’s arrest landed him in hot water both with his club and Coleen, who is expecting their fourth child.

She has not been seen with her wedding ring since. He is said to be desperate to win her forgiveness.

Rooney’s agent declined to comment.
