Pep Guardiola has praised his Manchester City players for staying true to his philosophy.

City have scored late winners on five occasions this season, including Raheem Sterling's 84th minute goal at Huddersfield on Sunday.

Guardiola believes this is because his players have learned not to panic and abandon his passing principles and resort to desperate long balls.

Sterling's 84th-minute goal came through another patient build-up from City and Guardiola said: "That's good. There is no panic. It sends a message to the team that we still want to win.

"We believe in what we want to do. The results help this a lot. Winning games in a row helps the mentality. You have to believe."

Guardiola has told £42million defender Eliaquim Mangala he can still have a future at the Etihad.

The France defender has been frozen out this season after falling down the pecking order.

Mangala stayed put in the summer when he could have moved, and with John Stones sidelines for six weeks with a hamstring injury, he could get a chance to shine, with doubts remaining over the long-term fitness of skipper Vincent Kompany.

Guardiola added: "I'm impressed with his behaviour in the training sessions. He's someone with a lot of experience and also with the national team in France.

"He has specific qualities and I'm going to use him. So he needs to keep working hard. He's a player for us. He's going to stay here."
