Everton's season went from bad to worse as they crashed out of the Europa League after a 3-0 defeat to Lyon.

David Unsworth's men needed to take something from the game to stay in the competition but the damage was done long before tonight.

The first-half was a dire affair with Cuco Martina being forced off on a stretcher after a heavy fall.

Everton improved after half-time and could have gone in front when Idrissa Gueye missed a decent chance.

But it was curtains as soon as Lyon opened the scoring through Bertrand Traore.

He latched on to a through ball and rounded Jordan Pickford before slotting into the net.

Houssem Aouar added a second before Morgan Schneiderlin saw red for a second yellow.

It went from bad to worse for the Toffees when Memphis Depay met a cross from the right with a header, which Pickford should have kept out.

Attention now turns to Sunday's clash with Watford as the search continues for a new manager.

That is that.

Everton are heading out of the Europa League.

The second goal is a killer blow for Unsworth’s men,

It is another defeat for the caretaker boss.

Much better second-half from Everton.

Sigurdsson has gone close now - but can’t get a touch on Lookman’s cross.

Can they nick it?

Goalless at the break.

So far, so good for Everton?

They have been resolute and strong at the back, which is an improvement on recent weeks.

Everton have offered little in terms of attacking threat though with Sigurdsson snatching at an opening.

They are still in it but cannot afford to lose with Atalanta 1-0 up in the other game.

There is concern for Cuco Martina, who was taken off on a stretcher after a heavy landing.

Cuco Martina is in real trouble here.

He is being forced off on a stretcher after landing heavily on his back.

Mo Besic looks set to replace him.

More like it from Everton.

They are starting to come forward a lot more with Baningime impressing.

They just miss that goal threat!

A lot of changes for Everton tonight.

They have struggled for goals...and are now going without a recognised striker.

From the team that lost at Leicester, only Pickford, Kenny, Williams, Gueye and Lennon keep their places.

Lyon boss wary of the unexpected

Lyon boss Bruno Genesio does not know quite what to expect from Everton on Thursday.

But he has no doubt they will be “prepared” for the Europa League Group E clash at the Groupama Stadium and are capable of beating his side.

Since Everton lost 2-1 to Lyon at Goodison Park a fortnight ago, they have sacked their manager Ronald Koeman.

The Toffees - bottom of the pool with one point from three games - head into Thursday’s match with David Unsworth in caretaker charge.

“I don’t know him very well, so I don’t know really how he will approach this game,” Genesio said on Wednesday.

“But what I know is it is a decisive game for them. I think they will be prepared for this game.

“They can win, because they have a lot of internationals.”
