Tottenham secured their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League on a memorable night at Wembley.

They battered European giants Real Madrid and in truth the scoreline flattered Zinedine Zidane's men.

Dele Alli was the hero for Spurs as he returned to form to score twice.

Christian Eriksen made it three soon after but Real ensured a nervy finale through Cristiano Ronaldo.

Alli opened the scoring, turning home from Trippier’s cross - although the full-back was in an offside position.

His second was deflected in off Sergio Ramos on a shocking night for the visitors.

Eriksen then made it three as he latched on to a pass before finding the bottom corner.

Zidane on Real shocker

We played against a better team tonight. We must accept that and not go over it too much.

This is a bad moment but I am not worried and I never will be, whatever happens.

We must keep our heads up. We have an experienced team. These players are champions, we will turn this around.

More from the Spurs boss

Of course this win gives us great belief for everyone and confidence. We are now in the next stage of the Champions League. But now it’s so important to compete against Crystal Palace [next weekend]. Like a manager you can’t stop thinking.

I told you yesterday that Dele was coming. It’s important for him - his debut in the Champions League this season. It’s important he felt good. I feel a little bad for Toby Aldeweireld we have to assess it [his injury].

Pochettino speaks

I’m very proud of my players and I congratulate them. I’m so pleased for Dele and our fans.

The victory is so important for us and the players. It’s a win over Real so it’s great for the club and fans.

There’s a long way to go until the end of the season. What’s important is trying to achieve our challenge and target.

What a night for Spurs!

They were on top from start to finish and 3-1 flattered Real.

Alli opened the scoring, turning home from Trippier’s cross before his second was deflected in.

Eriksen got in on the act to make it three and they could have got more.

Ronaldo ensured a nervy finale but this was a special night for Spurs.

And they are now into the last 16 of the Champions League.

How far can they go?

3-0! Eriksen wraps it up

Oh my word!

What a night for Mauricio Pochettino.

Real have been a shambles at the back and again they are caught out.

Eriksen gets in behind and coolly slots beyond Casilla.

2-0 - Spurs in dreamland

Tottenham are in dreamland now.

It is 2-0 and a second for Dele Alli.

Shocking defending from Real Madrid as Alli shrugs off Casemiro.

He then lets fly at goal and his shot deflects off Ramos and beyond Casilla.

No more than they deserve!

An excellent half from Tottenham.

They have been by far the better side and deservedly lead at Wembley.

The goal was a fortunate one with Trippier and Alli in an offside position when Harry Winks played the ball wide.

They won’t care though!

Real have been shocking and Zinedine Zidane doesn’t have too many options on the bench.

Spurs have already lost Toby Alderweireld and Ben Davies could be forced off too.

1-0 - What a moment for Spurs!

It’s been coming and Tottenham have the lead!

Real have started so slowly here.

A fine pass picks out Trippier on the right, although the full back seems to be in an offside position.

The flag stays down, he crosses for Alli and he is back on the scoresheet.

Wembley is rocking!

He will be forced off.

Cracking atmosphere at Wembley.

Spurs have started brightly, too.

Harry Kane will start against Real Madrid as Tottenham are handed huge boost for Champions League clash

Harry Kane will lead Tottenham’s attack against Real Madrid at Wembley on Wednesday night.

Tottenham striker Kane was passed fit to start after training fully yesterday and it is understood he will definitely play.

It is a major boost for Tottenham who lost their last two games against Manchester United and West Ham with Kane missing through a hamstring injury.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino said: “Yes, we are very confident. He is on the list. I think it maybe can be possible for him to be available to play tomorrow.”

Dele Alli also returns to Tottenham’s starting line up after a three game Euro ban.

Pochettino has also called on his side to be brave against the European champions, who were beaten by Girona in La Liga at the weekend.

“Of course this is a game that you have to be brave in. When you are playing against the best team in the world, if you are not brave, it is so difficult. You start losing. And yes we are going to be brave.

“For me it is it is important that our mentality is right good, we are going to try to play without fear, and dominate the game and try to win with that mentality.”

Missed the presser yesterday?

No problem.

Here is Mauricio Pochettino in his finest...

Gareth Bale is back

Gareth Bale is back in training.

He won’t be fit to face old club Tottenham tonight, as he has stayed back in Madrid.

But he posted this video of him training on his own today.

Real Madrid training

Real Madrid trained at Wembley last night.

They looked like they had a pretty enjoyable session.

The pitch was looking very pretty.

Guest appearance

Last time Real Madrid came to London they won 1-0.

But Rafael van der Vaart put in a top performance in midfield.

He has been welcomed back tonight as Spurs’ special guest.

Tonight's programme

Our man at the ground is John Cross, who is never knowingly late to anything.

True to form he is already at Wembley - just the two and a half hours before kick off.

Our chief football writer has posted a picture of the front cover of the programme.

Decent design.

Dele Alli

Big night for Dele Alli, as he tries to pin his place as one of the world’s greatest.

What better place than to do that at Wembley against Real Madrid?

Plenty has been said and written this week about his indiscipline, with accusations of diving leveed at him.

What your opinion he has a massive future in front of him.

Tottenham arrive

Tottenham have arrived at Wembley ahead of the game.

All looking very smart, if a little apprehensive, in their tracksuits.

Could they find a famous win tonight?

Ronaldo or Kane?

Real Madrid are in London for their Champions League group game with Tottenham.

Their Bernabeu meeting last month ended 1-1 and a win for either side will likely lead to qualification from the group in top spot, so there is plenty at stake.

Cristiano Ronaldo, the tournament’s all-time record scorer, has travelled and will be hoping to have his name on tomorrow’s back pages.

Harry Kane, though, may have something to say about that. The England forward has recovered from a hamstring strain and is set to start at Wembley.

With tonight’s game in mind, we asked our writers who they would rather have in their team if they could pick just one: Kane or Ronaldo?
