Gareth Barry is on the bench West Brom to face Manchester United on Sunday after shrugging off a thigh problem.

The midfielder has missed the last two games but is fit again and Matt Phillips (hamstring) and Craig Dawson (knee) are close to a comeback.

Nacer Chadli (hip) and James Morrison (Achilles) are definitely out for Alan Pardew at The Hawthorns.

Oliver Burke makes a surprise start for the Baggies.

Paul Pogba completes his three-game ban as Manchester United travel to West Brom.

Eric Bailly, meanwhile, could be out for as long as three months after ankle surgery and there are questions over Marouane Fellaini and Marcos Rojo.

Michael Carrick remains out but Marcus Rashford, Ander Herrera and Ashley Young all start after being named on the bench against Bournemouth in midweek.

Follow all the action below.

West Brom: Foster, Nyom, Hegazi, Evans, Gibbs, Krychowiak, Yacob, Livermore, Burke, McClean, Rondon.

Subs: Myhill, Brunt, Barry, McAuley, Field, Robson-Kanu, Rodriguez

Manchester United: De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Smalling, Young, Herrera, Matic, Mata, Lingard, Rashford, Lukaku.

Subs: Romero, Lindelof, Shaw, Rojo, McTominay, Ibrahimovic, Martial

4. Alan Pardew has some serious work to do

West Brom started quite well, looked solid - and then collapsed all too easily.

Gareth Barry’s consolation was the first goal in Pardew’s first four games in charge, they are a team bereft of belief and the former Newcastle and Crystal Palace boss desperately needs to inject some of his own confidence into the players.

West Brom got better in the second half after Gareth Barry came on and they also went to a 4-4-2. Pardew will need every trick in the book to get out of trouble.

3. Romelu Lukaku is a flat track bully

Lukaku scored his 15th goal of the season but did little to dispel the theory that he is a flat track bully.

The £75m striker drew a blank and got criticised for his performance against Manchester City last week and then scored against Bournemouth in midweek and broke the deadlock against West Brom.

Lukaku has not scored against any of United’s top six rivals this season and is struggling to shake off the accusation that he is not a big game player.

2. Man United fans bite back

The away supporters gave us a chorus of “Park the bus, park the bus Man United, playing football the Mourinho way.”

It was a great way to respond to the dressing room taunts from Man City’s players after their win over Tottenham.

The fall-out from the Old Trafford tunnel bust-up continues, but while Jose Mourinho has sulked and come out of it badly, the United fans at least injected some humour.

1. Man United win - but it’s so underwhelming

Believe it or not, Manchester United have made the best start to a season since Sir Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford.

However, United have been completely overwhelmed and overshadowed by Manchester City. They are second but second is nowhere if you are Jose Mourinho.

United fans expect big trophies and they want them with style. They are not going to get that this season.

Talking points

Man United held on to defeat West Brom and close the gap on Manchester City to 11 points at the top of the Premier League.

Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard had put the Red Devils in charge, but Mourinho’s men could not finish off the Baggies.

Gareth Barry prodded home from close range to halve the deficit and the Baggies rallied to give United a real scare.

Jay Rodriguez headed just wide after Phil Jones lost his man but United held on to secure the points and a second consecutive win since the defeat in the Manchester derby.

Here’s John Cross with five talking points from the Hawthorns.

Rodriguez flashes wide with a free header from 12 yards.

Very close and Mourinho would have been livid had that gone in.

Poor marking from Phil Jones and now Scott McTominay comes on for Jesse Lingard.

Goal! West Brom 1-2 Man United (Barry)

Barry prods home as United fail to clear their lines inside the penalty area.

Poor defending and now United suddenly have to defend a one-goal lead with more than 10 minutes to go.

Can the Baggies snatch a point?

It’s been over six hours of football since the Baggies have scored a goal.

Valencia is down and will not be able to continue.

Mata immediately signals for a substitution.

Lukaku slips in Lingard through on goal.

Powerful hit but straight down Foster’s throat.

That would have been a stunning goal.

Almost three!

Rashford guides a volley towards the far post with the ball skipping up off the turf.

It’s beaten Foster but sails past the post.

Smalling defends well to clear as West Brom push forward early on.

Rashford picks out Lukaku but the Belgian times his run poorly and is caught offside.

Pardew knows he needs to throw caution to the wind here.

Redknapp slams Lukaku non-celebration

When he gets the right delivery he’s unstoppable.

I don’t get the non-celebration, whether he’s unhappy? It’s irrelevant.

He’s paid big money to score for Man United. I’ll never get it.

Livermore takes aim with his left before dragging it back on to his right.

It’s got decent power behind it, but De Gea won’t be troubled by that.

Almost at the break and Mourinho will welcome such a controlling lead already.

Long way back for Pardew’s men.

Goal! West Brom 0-2 Man United (Lingard)

Lingard’s effort is deflected in off Hegazi and this one looks done already.

United sense an opportunity to kill the Baggies off before the interval.

Mourinho still motionless in the dugout.

A quick check on Lukaku’s goals for Everton sees the Belgian celebrate wildly after scoring.

So there’s clearly something wrong with the No.9.

Goal! West Brom 0-1 Man United (Lukaku)

Wonderful cross from Rashford, wonderful header from Lukaku, United lead!

No celebration from the Belgian, which is odd. Two goals and two no-celebrations.

Neville believes it is to do with his former allegiance to the Baggies, not sure about that.

Dangerous ball into the box is inches away from Lukaku to convert inside the six-yard box.

Pards will be happy with this start, they have settled and look comfortable.

United not a major threat yet.

McClean pushing down the left and asking questions of United.

Matic seeing a lot of the ball at the moment.

West Brom solid when they lose it and setting up deep.

Welcome

West Brom boss Alan Pardew believes Jose Mourinho has a better winning formula than Pep Guardiola.

The Baggies chief revealed his admiration for Manchester United manager Mourinho’s mentality ahead of Sunday’s game at The Hawthorns.

Manchester City boss Guardiola has earned praise for City’s record-breaking Premier League winning streak this season, including a 2-1 derby victory at Old Trafford, with his side runaway leaders.

But Pardew feels Mourinho, who won the Europa League, Community Shield and League Cup in his first season at United, has a winning plan which sets him apart.

“Jose and myself would love to win a game 4-0 playing flamboyant football,” he said.

“You can’t do that, you just have to find a way to win sometimes, and that’s the thing he does better than anyone else, including Pep, he wins more trophies. He gets a lot of criticism which I think is unfounded.

“You get to the Community Shield by winning the Premier League or FA Cup. Then that’s another trophy. I don’t understand why people don’t think it’s a trophy. His targets and what he does are about winning. Simple as that.

“As managers of course, particularly if you’re manager of Manchester United, you’re going to get criticised. Sir Alex Ferguson got criticised and went through periods where fans were baying for him.

“It comes with the territory and Jose’s strong enough and big enough to win trophies, which I’m sure he’s going to do.”
