Arsenal claimed the Community Shield at Wembley with a penalty shootout victory over Chelsea, following a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes.

The Gunners, who lost Per Mertesacker early on due to a head injury, had fallen behind early in the second half.

After a Chelsea corner wasn't fully cleared, the ball was returned into the Arsenal box, and Victor Moses was on hand to fire Antonio Conte's men in front.

However, Arsene Wenger's side rallied, and after Pedro was sent off for a foul on Mohamed Elneny, Sead Kolasinac levelled the scores with a well-placed header just 82 seconds later.

That took the game to penalties, where Thibaut Courtois blazed over the crossbar and Alvaro Morata, Chelsea's new record signing, fired wide.

On the new ABBA penalty rules, that left Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain score, offering Olivier Giroud the chance to hand Arsenal victory, which the Frenchman did with aplomb.

Here’s a look at the winners and losers from the clash at Wembley:

Winner: Alex Iwobi

The Nigerian forward made 38 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners, but only nine of those were for the full 90 minutes.

Perhaps he will be back out of the starting XI next weekend when Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil are expected to both be available, but this display - playing just off Alexandre Lacazette - will have given Arsene Wenger food for thought.

The 21-year-old was busy in behind the Gunners’ new No.9, and troubled Chelsea’s back three with his pace and some intelligent movement, often dipping out wide and then darting back centrally.

One piece of wonderful footwork in the first half almost brought a goal (his shot was comfortably dealt with by Thibaut Courtois) and he does need to give more in terms of end product - having scored just four times last term.

But this was a 66 minutes of brightness, which suggests he could have a big role to play this season.

Loser: Michy Batshuayi

The Belgian hitman was one of Chelsea’s stars during pre-season, scoring regularly and generally impressing with his displays.

However, with Alvaro Morata having not been signed for £70million just to be a substitute, Batshuayi must now impress every time he is given minutes by Conte.

At Wembley, the former Marseille man worked hard and some of his hold-up play was very good - an underrated facet of his game.

But he had little to go on in terms of chances created for him, failed to make an opportunity for himself and never really stretched the Arsenal defence in behind - something made all the more apparent by Morata's excellent movement during his second-half cameo.

A missed opportunity.

Winner: Sead Kolasinac

Kolasinac has impressed his manager in pre-season - “every single week he moved his level up” - and is becoming something of a cult hero among the Arsenal faithful.

No defender in the Bundesliga made more assists than the former Schalke man last term (5), as he thrived playing as a left wing-back for Die Konigsblauen.

But the 24-year-old showed his versatility here, stepping from the bench in the first half to move in as one of Arsenal’s three centre-halves when Per Mertesacker went off injured.

Again he impressed, both in terms of his defensive work - carefully marshalling the tricky Willian and proving too muscular for Batshuayi - but particularly with his bringing the ball out from the back, the barrel-chested Bosnian chugging forwards and taking the game to Chelsea, looking to make things happen.

Of course, he also showed that he’ll be a threat at set-pieces, scoring the equaliser with a well-placed header after escaping his marker.

Loser: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

The England midfielder again played left wing-back, just as he did in the FA Cup final back in May.

And while he probably won’t complain too loudly about being out of position given that he is in the starting XI, it’s not doing him any favours.

He showed willingness and diligence with his defensive duties, but playing as a left wing-back completely stifles his attacking threat - he isn’t comfortable going to the line on his left foot, wants to always tuck inside, and it makes Arsenal’s play somewhat lopsided.

The 23-year-old has just one year left on his deal at the Emirates and Premier League rivals are sniffing around. If he’s not playing from the right, it’s certainly worth him looking elsewhere ahead of the transfer window’s end.

Winner: N'Golo Kante

The all-action Frenchman put in his customary energetic performance and was at the heart of everything that was good about Chelsea's play.

He made a number of excellent forward runs as Chelsea transitioned from defence to attack, leading the charge and taking Arsenal players out of the game with his drive.

Additionally, there was one run down the left side that left a number of Arsenal players trailing in his wake, where the ex-Leicester man showed a somewhat surprising turn of pace.

If Chelsea are to retain their Premier League title, he'll again be crucial. Tiemoue Bakayoko may have arrived for big-money from Monaco, but it won't be Kante's spot he takes.
