He's only just breaking into the Arsenal team, but young Gunner Reiss Nelson is already making plans for life after football.

Big plans.

Because the 17-year-old - who is tipped to feature when the Gunners face Red Star Belgrade in the Serbian capital in the Europa League on Thursday - has an eye on a rather drastic change of sporting career.

He wants to go into MMA.

Speaking to the latest issue of the Arsenal Magazine , Nelson spoke of his admiration for Conor McGregor and revealed that he was backing the Irishman all the way in August's superfight with boxing legend Floyd Mayweather.

“I watched the McGregor fight,” he said.

“And for the first couple of rounds I felt he was doing really well and he had Mayweather on the back foot, so I was confident that it would be a good fight and he might win, but then as the rounds went on he got pretty tired."

McGregor seems to be something of a role model for the teenager, who has appeared for the Gunners' first team four times this season but is yet to make his Premier League bow.

“I was backing McGregor all the way," he continued. "I’m a really big UFC fan. I think his aura and his personality are really great. I like to watch a lot of his documentaries and his vlog, and I think he’s just come up from nothing really. He was a plumber before he became a fighter, he’s worked really hard and his story is great.

“In some ways, I look up to him as a sportsman. His work rate and the effort he puts in is immense."

And it seems as though a move to emulate McGregor in the octagon could be on the cards.

“MMA is something that I may want to get into after football," said Nelson.

"I spent some time over the summer doing a lot of kickboxing and I just felt that it was something I enjoyed doing a lot.”

He's got a pretty promising football career to get through first though!
