Rio Ferdinand believes Liverpool are missing a defensive leader in the mould of Jamie Carragher or Sami Hyypia .

The Anfield club threw away two points in their opening Champions League clash with Sevilla last night .

The Spanish side took the lead through Wissam Ben Yedder before goals from Roberto Firmino and Mo Sala turned the tie on its head.

But Firmino missed a first-half penalty before Joaquin Correa levelled.

And Ferdinand said: "They're fantastic going forward, we can talk about that all day long, but I just think they're missing a centre-half or a leader.

"You used to hear [Jamie] Carragher screaming his head off during games, or a Sami Hyypia, or a holding midfielder, someone who can control a game and bully people. There's no-one with that personality in there to take hold of games.

"Jordan Henderson hit the nail on the heard, they've got to be more ruthless, they've got to finish teams off.

"They had Sevilla on the rack but they didn't put the nail in the coffin to finish the game off and they got caught with a sucker punch.

"There are two elements to how they defend; they’re great when they defend high but if the [opposition] team gets out, the intensity drops and they don’t look the same team at all."

Liverpool travel to Spartak Moscow on September 26 for their next European tie.
