Sadio Mane will be banned for three games after his appeal against the length of his suspension was rejected.

The Liverpool star was sent off for kicking Manchester City keeper Ederson in the face during his side's 5-0 defeat on Saturday.

Mane will miss this weekend's clash at home to Burnley as well as two games against Leicester - one in the Premier League and one in the EFL Cup.

Liverpool had appealed the length of the ban rather than the red card itself.

The Anfield club argued that Mane’s actions were totally without malice, and the injury was the result of an accident, and that the ban should reflect his intent to solely play the ball.

But a statement from the Football Association said: "Sadio Mane's three-match suspension, which was effective immediately, remains in place after his claim of excessive punishment was rejected following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing."

Liverpool were trailing 1-0 at the Etihad but went on to concede a further four goals.
